Wiring options

  • OK, I have my 'dry build' guitar up and running. It's great but there's a lot more it could do sonically. You can actually take a stock Telecaster, put in a five-position switch and get five different tones from the pickups alone. How come? Well, typically, a Fender guitar combines pickups in parallel, which gives you the 'quack' tones on a Strat and that slightly anonomous mid position on a Tele - partly because the tone of the two pickups is so different on a Tele. When you start wiring the pickups in series, you get more into Brian May Red/humbucker territory. Then there's the option of putting one coil out of phase...

I'll be working over Christmas to come up with a wiring scheme that really gives everything the guitar can deliver, without coming up with a mess of switches that could never work on stage.
